• Men United began in 1994 when a father who was caring for his six month baby boy,was referred to a social services family centre in Nottingham .He felt isolated in a woman’s world and the support received was aimed at his child's welfare and not for the needs of a single father.
• He tried to make contact with other fathers dropping children off at the family centre and slowly they began to talk with him about their problems and the lack of fatherhood support.
• With the help of a male social work student,a small group of fathers began to meet weekly in a room at the family centre and the group Men United was formed. At the beginning there was about 2 or 3 fathers attending but grew to a core of six after about 18 months .Children were also catered for during meetings by access to a male crèche worker.
• As the group became more established the fathers were supported, for a short time .by a community development worker and when this assistance ended the group decided to remain an independent self-help voluntary group working towards maintaining the much needed support for fathers, Their children and raising awareness about fatherhood In general.
